The Cofimvaba Schools District  Project is a collaborative effort between  members of  the National System of Innovation, the private sector and NGOs, the South African Government and the people of Cofimvaba. The project aims to support Government in its efforts to improve education in rural schools by introducing technological interventions. The project was initiated by the Departments of Science and Technology and Basic Education, and is managed by CSIR Meraka Institute.

The quality of teaching and learning is influenced by many different things. This project takes a holistic view, considering environmental factors such as water, sanitation, nutrition and energy as well as wider development considerations to ensure sustainability and replicability. All these and other elements form part of the bigger plan to improve education in the area
